In 2023, the US pharmaceutical companies combined profit was $1.6 Trillion dollars, which in one year increased by $100 billion dollars when compared to the profit of 2022. Only 2.9% of that goes into prevention.
Now to be completely honest, I have no true way of understanding these enormous numbers. And I’ve gone on a few rants about healthcare and how I think we are going about it in the wrong way, but this email isn’t about healthcare exactly. It’s about happiness and our grave misunderstanding of it.
I recently texted a colleague about my surprise and excitement about some of the growth I’ve been seeing with my business. We texted back a few times and she wrote about how when her schedule has a certain number of visits or more, she’s “happy as a clam.”
Now, even as I write this, I grin at the image of a smiling clam, just as I did the other day when I received the message. But I also stopped in a nearly automatic pause of reflection…. “oh yes, this is familiar.”
This thinking that I can be happy when_______.
We each fill in that blank with our own thoughts about what we need to be happy.
When: I’m pain free / I lose all this extra weight / I get over this sickness / The house is clean / I make enough money /
Just about everyone of us gets caught up in this little game that our ego plays with us, which always starts with us on the losing side. You might win the game from time to time, but your ego then has the authority to change the rules. Now you need to make more money or have less clutter, or less wrinkles, or….who knows. I know you’ve experienced this, because we all have. When you’ve played the game and done the thing you need to be happy….the new game begins and once again you need to find a way to be happy.
Pharmaceutical companies are made up of people. Some of these people are happy and content people who are really trying to find solutions for people who are suffering and sick. Some of the people are unhappy and their thinking tells them that they can be happy when they make enough money. They see the potential dollar signs in the business they chose and are utilizing it as a way to attempt to create happiness.
Ego says, “Once everything falls into place, I’ll feel peace.”
Spirit says, “Find your peace, and then everything will fall into place.”
- Marianne Williamson
What if we are all going about life in reverse order, which is why the very thing we are seeking for is impossible to find.
Start with the end in mind. Start with peace, contentment, and happiness and watch how your world and your health transform.
