How do we create lasting, sustainable, and maybe even EASY change?
As I sit with my right leg crossed over my left, a classic sitting position for me, I listened intently to the unknowingly beautiful woman sitting in a black faux velvet sofa across from me. She’s telling me how she can’t change or do anything right, AND all the reasons that is true.
I’m sure you’ve heard reasons of a similar nature in your own head. I’m a procrastinator. I just don’t want to. I’m self conscious. I’m this, that, or the other.
And you probably have examples of why those may feel “true” to you. Maybe you’ve missed some bills, avoiding doing exercises in the past, end up choosing to eat a donut and letting all of your food choices go to pot. Maybe you didn’t walk after dinner, but chose to stay in bed and watch silly or pointless things on YouTube or TikTok.
We’ve been told that you are what you repeatedly do, so if you continue to do (or not do) certain types of things, ergo that is WHO YOU ARE. But I’m her to call BS on that.
You are so much more than what you do, what you think, what you don’t do, and what you look like. So you missed your exercises, ate a donut for breakfast, or stayed up late binge watching One Day on Netflix (absolutely AMAZING mini-series, by the way!).
None of these things define who you are OR what you are going to do tomorrow. That is of course, unless you don’t realize you have a choice of the matter. And then by all means…the story will repeat itself, and you’ll never choose a smoothie for breakfast, snuggle under your covers for an early night’s sleep, or enjoy rolling out a yoga mat to do your physical therapy exercises or yoga routine in the morning.
Speaking with the woman across from me, I kindly challenged the notion that because of what she has done, that is who she is. As our conversation continued, I had the fortunate opportunity of watching something shift in her. It was a matter of moments, and you could see the change. She saw the choice in front of her. She naturally sat up a little higher and an energy that has always been there started to emanate.
Her beauty was shining through again. She immediately felt empowered and capable of something she previously saw as impossible. I’m happy to say that this isn’t uncommon with my patients and clients. This is the path to sustainable and easy change. So whether it’s working towards improving your physical health or just enjoying your life again, it starts from a deeper understanding of how your mind works.
When we come from this place, it’s amazing what is possible!
