What do you know about your heart?

“What do you know about your heart?” my coach asked me.

After quite a long pause, “I know its entirely unpredictable,” I replied.

And that is true. The guidance from your heart, is beautifully and completely fickle.

Even though we can’t predict how our heart will respond or direct us, we can expect our heart to be there for us, no matter what.

Let me give you an example.

I first began to trust my heart with my work as a physical therapist. In every other area of my life, I worked analytically, rationally, and logically. I needed to make sure there was concrete evidence and rationale to take the steps I needed to take to get the best possible outcome. This could be in my relationships, friendships, and even what I would eat or how I would exercise.

What did this look like? I spent A LOT of time thinking about how to live my life, rather than actually live it.

But when I worked with human beings and their human bodies, I started to see something unexpected. The more I tried to think out the solutions, the less connected I was to the person in front of me. So whenever I felt stuck, I stopped thinking about what I needed to do and did whatever my heart told me to do.

Now, I didn’t know it was my heart, to be entirely honest, this is something I’ve learned upon reflection over the years. When I was stuck, I would kind of shake my head like I was shaking out the ineffective thinking to allow something new to come in. This would sometimes be a literal shake, and at other times only figurative.

A new exercise, a new hands on treatment, or even a nudge to look at a completely different body part would follow. Something new would always come. Sometimes immediately and other times with a slight delay. This was my heart speaking to me.

At least what I’ve come to call my heart. You may call it something else, “God”, “The Universe”, or “Life.”

Consider this, the energy that takes an acorn and transforms it into a century old oak tree is the same energy that takes you from a embryo into the human being that you are today. That energy is still here now. It’s always here now. This is your heart, beating your heart, breathing your lungs, growing your hair, and healing your wounds.

This heart of yours is infinite. Your personal mind only has the resources and information it has been exposed to. It only knows the classes and courses you’ve studied, the experiences you’ve had in the past, the memories inside it’s head and the information it’s heard other people share.

Your mind/intellect is limited, no matter how smart you are. Contrast that, to the heart’s capacity, which is equal to that of the entire f*#%ing universe.

Which would you prefer to operate from?
