Do you ever struggle with feeling like you aren’t enough?
I had a lot of low moods throughout my life. I’ve had an eating disorder, thoughts of suicide, issues with severe pain and bowel disorders. In fact, I suffered with severe low self-esteem for most of my life. Even 6 years ago, I was writing little love notes to myself on my bathroom mirror with kind words, “You are enough” with a heart next to it.
Of course, after a few days, I barely noticed the post-it note. So I would work every day to prove I was enough to my husband, co-workers, and anyone who was around me. (They never asked me to behave this way). Of course, this was exhausting, and being lazy, I’d give up, and go back to feeling like I sucked at life.
Fortunately, this lazy thing turned out to be instrumental.
Now, lazy may be an understatement. I will go for a 24 mile mountain bike ride, most people won’t think that’s lazy. But I’ll give up on a meditation routine within a few weeks if I don’t think it’s helping. I’ll cook mostly fresh meals from scratch, but I won’t journal 3 things I’m grateful for everyday, despite all the well intentioned and highly esteemed, influential people in the world telling me I should.
I didn’t do these things, because I didn’t see a real significant change in my experience of life. If I did, I’m sure I would have kept doing them. I suspect the same is true for you.
Here’s what did change my life: seeing that I didn’t need to change in order to be okay.
It was freeing in the best possible way. I saved so much time and energy, which was wonderful, because I didn’t have a lot of either of those, being a new mom.
